Borussia Mönchengladbach produced their most resolute performance of the season to defeat high-flying Bayer Leverkusen 1-0. Under immense pressure following a string of poor results, Eugen Polanski’s side displayed a tactical discipline that frustrated Kasper Hjulmand’s creative stars for the full 90 minutes.
The decisive moment arrived in the 27th minute. After winning a corner against the run of play, Kevin Stöger delivered a pinpoint cross into the heart of the area. Kevin Diks outmuscled Jarell Quansah to power a header past Janis Blaswich, sending the home support into a frenzy. It was Diks' fourth goal of the season, further cementing his importance to the Foals' defense and attack.
Leverkusen dominated possession (62%) and looked to respond immediately through Malik Tillman and Patrik Schick, but Gladbach goalkeeper Moritz Nicolas was in inspired form. Nicolas made seven saves in total, including a spectacular fingertip stop to deny an Alejandro Grimaldo free-kick just before halftime.
The second half saw Leverkusen throw everything forward, introducing Jonas Hofmann and Martin Terrier to find an equalizer. However, the Gladbach backline, led by Nico Elvedi and Yannik Engelhardt, remained impenetrable. Despite 10 minutes of stoppage time and a late scare involving a VAR penalty check for a challenge on Arthur, the hosts held on for a famous victory.
What It Means: This win moves Gladbach six points clear of the relegation playoff spot, providing much-needed breathing room for Polanski. For Leverkusen, the defeat is a significant blow to their Champions League aspirations, leaving them in 6th place and four points adrift of the top four.
