Chelsea’s resurgence under Liam Rosenior reached a new peak at Molineux as Cole Palmer produced a masterclass, scoring three goals in 38 minutes to brush aside a struggling Wolverhampton Wanderers. The victory cements Chelsea’s position in the top-five race and leaves the hosts deeper in relegation trouble.
The scoring began in the 12th minute when João Pedro was tripped in the area by Matt Doherty. Palmer stepped up and coolly dispatched the penalty, sending José Sá the wrong way. Wolves struggled to cope with the Blues' movement, and a second penalty was awarded in the 33rd minute after Yerson Mosquera pushed João Pedro. Palmer again made no mistake from the spot, doubling the lead and marking his 50th goal for Chelsea in his 100th appearance.
The hat-trick was completed just five minutes later in the 38th minute. A fluid team move saw Enzo Fernández find Marc Cucurella, whose perfectly weighted cut-back was met by Palmer, who smashed a first-time strike into the roof of the net.
Wolves showed more fight in the second half despite the pouring rain. They pulled a goal back in the 54th minute when Tolu Arokodare headed home from close range after an Adam Armstrong flick-on, but it proved to be nothing more than a consolation. Chelsea managed the closing stages professionally, even with late injury concerns for Wesley Fofana and Andrey Santos.
What It Means: Chelsea stay within touching distance of fourth-placed Manchester United as the battle for Champions League football intensifies. For Wolves, a third straight league defeat leaves them at the bottom of the table, facing an increasingly uphill battle for survival.
